Who We Are
Our Mission
Langley’s mission is to serve individuals with intellectual disabilities, their families and our community by providing comprehensive residential and support services that enable these individuals to live valued, productive lives.
Our History
At monthly dances, members of three McLean area churches wondered what would happen to the individuals with intellectual disabilities they met when their parents eventually died. As a result, through the efforts of members of Trinity United Methodist Church, Immanuel Presbyterian Church, and Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, Langley Nonprofit Housing Development Corporation was formed in 1983. Langley’s first home opened in 1985 with three other homes to follow over the course of the next six years.
As some people became more self-sufficient as a result of the support that they had received, Langley approached Fairfax County government so that those who were no longer in need of intensive support could move into their own places. Today, this program comprises most of the people Langley supports—in their own homes, in their own communities, living lives they chose. As the focus of our program changed to serve individuals wherever they lived, a name change seemed appropriate. Langley Residential Support Services is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit providing support to people with intellectual disability in Fairfax County, Virginia.
Our Services
Langley currently operates four residential homes serving people with intellectual disabilities. The homes have varying degrees of support provided by professional, well-trained staff. Two homes have 24 hour supervision while the other 2 houses have night and weekend support. Two houses serve women and two serve men. Life in a Langley home mirrors life in the homes of most adults. With assistance, residents learn to take responsibility for their finances, diet, health, and the usual day-to-day chores of housekeeping. Best of all, they learn to live successfully in the community.
In Langley’s Community Support Program people live in their own homes or with their parents. Individuals receive personalized services agreed upon by themselves and their support team. Counseling focuses on health and safety related services with the aim of enabling them to function in the community. Most individuals need training in, and assistance with, cooking, shopping, using community resources, monitoring their health, money management and other life skills.
Langley also offers private pay services for those individuals who do not qualify for government funded services.
Our Funding
Langley receives funding through a contract for services from the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board, monthly fees and a variety of fund raising activities. Langley is a member/beneficiary of the Combined Federal Campaign. The CFC number is 49881.
